Then you start researching it.
One website says window film is perfectly safe for double-pane windows. Another warns that it can crack the glass, damage the window seal, or void your warranty. A product at the hardware store says it works on most windows, while a professional installer says the answer depends on the glass.
So, who is right?
Window film can be safely installed on many double-pane windows, but not every film is appropriate for every double-pane window.
The safety and performance of the installation depend on the construction of the window, the type of glass, the location of any Low-E coating, the condition of the glass, and the amount of solar energy the selected film absorbs.
That does not mean double-pane windows should never be tinted. It means the film needs to be matched to the glass instead of selected based only on appearance or how dark it looks.
Major architectural film manufacturers offer products approved for dual-pane windows, and LLumar (major film manufacturer) states that architectural window film is safe for dual-pane windows and most types of Low-E glass. However, the company also notes that certain films are better suited to specific glass configurations.
A double-pane window contains two pieces of glass separated by a sealed space. These windows are also commonly called dual-pane windows or insulated glass units.
The space between the panes may contain air or an insulating gas such as argon or krypton. A spacer around the edges keeps the panes separated, while a perimeter seal prevents air and moisture from entering the space. Many modern double-pane windows also include a Low-E coating that further improves their energy performance.

Not all Low-E windows behave the same way. Some coatings are designed primarily to improve insulation. Others are designed to limit solar heat gain. Two windows may both be advertised as Low-E while reacting differently to the same window film.
